Avalanche Warning in effect for Washington, Oregon mountain areas

Heavy snow and rapidly warming temperatures create dangerous mountain conditions.

SEATTLE — The Northwest Avalanche Center (NWAC) in Seattle has issued an Avalanche Warning for many western Washington mountain areas.

The warning has been issued for Stevens and Snoqualmie passes, the west slopes of the Washington Cascades and Mount Hood in Oregon, according to the NWAC.

The warning is in effect from 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2 through 6 p.m. Monday, Dec. 4.

Expected conditions include heavy snow and rapidly warming temperatures, which lead to “very dangerous avalanche conditions,” according to the NWAC.

Snowfall rates and temperatures are expected to increase throughout the day on Monday, leading to a more unstable snowpack.

The NWAC recommends people do not travel in avalanche terrain and avoid any area where avalanches may start, run or stop, as well as steep slopes and lower-angle terrain beneath slopes greater than 30 degrees.
