Celebrate caregivers during National Family Caregivers Month

Caregiving can take its toll physically, financially and emotionally, so it’s important to ask for help and practice self-care. Sponsored by AARP.

SEATTLE — More than 48 million Americans are family caregivers, and AARP is shining a light on these everyday heroes during National Family Caregivers Month. Family caregivers help their older parents, spouses and other loved ones live independently by managing medications, preparing meals, helping with bathing and dressing and much more.

“If you are taking care of a loved one by preparing meals or helping to take care of bills, you are a family caregiver,” said Marguerite Ro, AARP Washington state director. “During National Caregivers Month, we really want to say thank you and acknowledge all of that work that caregivers are providing for their loved ones.”

It’s key that caregivers know they are not alone, and AARP offers resources to help. The AARP website has information about networks to connect virtually and in person with fellow caregivers, as well as guides to understand various aspects of caregiving.

Ro says it’s important for family caregivers to take care of themselves and ask for help.

“We would urge people not to hesitate to ask for help because, in fact, there are so many resources,” she said.

Family caregiver Dori Gillam cared for both of her parents and sought resources to help with challenging decisions and tasks.

“I had been a corporate manager for a couple of decades, and I thought I was pretty smart and competent and resourceful, but navigating the healthcare system and the medical system was a mystery,” Gillam said.

She encourages fellow caregivers to seek information, prepare for what’s to come, connect with others and ask for assistance when needed.

“Make sure that you’re not going it alone,” Gillam said. “Ask for help early and take care of yourself.”

AARP’s new “I Am a Caregiver” initiative is designed to create visibility and push for solutions that save caregivers time and money, like paid leave, caregiver tax credits and more.

“We’re coming together to ask Congress and our state legislatures for the support that family caregivers need because just saying thank you isn’t enough,” Ro said.
